"What does fitness mean?" is a commonly asked question. Technically, physical fitness involves measurements and levels of muscular strength and endurance, muscle tone, cardiac action and response to activity, agility, balance, coordination, etc. physical form is also a personal choice.

It's what we feel when we get up in the morning; how tired or fresh we feel after a hard day's work; how eagerly we look forward to doing the things we all love to do - picnicking, skiing - or the things we have to do - washing floors. Each person is their own best judge of what fitness is and what it means to them.

When the Royal Canadian Air Force began building a physical fitness program in the years following World War II, it based its plans on three basic facts:

  • fitness is the direct result of physical activity
  • Exercise that improves physical fitness must be frequent and vigorous.
  • people accept challenges.

After two years of delicate research, a team of doctors, scientists, physical education specialists, and ARC artists produced the 5BX and XBX fitness plans.

These Five Core Exercises for Men and Ten Core Exercises for Women have been designed to provide everyone, regardless of age or fitness level, the opportunity to achieve and maintain desirable levels of fitness.

And it only took a very small part of the day - 11 minutes for men, 12 minutes for women. The result made fitness and publishing history.

Although there have been countless books written on the subject, never has one been so enthusiastically received as the two sets of exercises offered in this book.

When the Queen's Printer's Office made them available to the public, the booklets became all-time Canadian bestsellers. At first, a few thousand, soon over a hundred thousand, and now over a million Canadians have opted for the 5BX and XBX plans.

Praised by medical authorities and endorsed by fitness organizations, the exercises have become a daily habit in most Canadian homes. Reports that the ARC had devised a unique and simple way to stay in shape quickly spread overseas.
